The City of Huntington Fire Department houses a variety of Special Operations units and serves as the host jurisdiction for West Virginia Regional Response Team 6 (RRT) that covers Cabell, Wayne, Mason, Lincoln, Boone and Mingo Counties.  This team is a specialized unit that provides advanced Hazardous Materials (HazMat) and Technical Rescue capabilities across the region. The team is equipped with a dedicated HazMat apparatus (HazMat 1), an Air and Light Unit (Rescue 11), and a Technical Rescue Ladder (Rescue 1). These units are cross-staffed by specially trained personnel who respond to incidents involving chemical spills, gas leaks, structural collapse, confined-space emergencies, high-angle rescues, and other complex scenarios. The RRT operates in mutual aid coordination with neighboring fire departments, bringing a high level of technical expertise and specialized equipment to incidents that exceed the capabilities of standard engine or ladder companies. Members undergo rigorous training and national certification in areas such as hazardous materials mitigation, technical rescue operations, weapons of mass destruction, and the use of protective equipment and detection instruments—ensuring the team can safely and effectively manage high-risk emergency situations. By leading regional response efforts and supporting multi-jurisdictional operations, RRT 6 exemplifies the City of Huntington Fire Department’s commitment to safety, preparedness, and collaborative emergency response throughout West Virginia.
