The Hiring Process

Trained firefighters will provide guidance on successfully completing the test.


Written Exam

A competitive 100 question exam taken at Mountain Health Arena.


Physical Agility Test

Consists of eight critical physical tasks that simulate the actual job duties.

Mentoring involves giving the candidate guidance in how to get in shape for the Candidate Physical Agility Test as well as hands on time with the course and equipment utilized during the test.

From these tests, a hiring list will be compiled based on the written scores. This list will be utilized to hire as needed for up to 3 years. Once you are contacted that you are being considered for original appointment to the City of Huntington Fire Department, you will be given a background examination, psychological testing, and a thorough physical examination by physicians.

Civil Service Requirements

  • Must be a citizen of the United States

  • Application must be filed between the ages of 18 and 36

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent

  • Physical Requirements: The Huntington Fire Department utilizes the Candidate Physical Abilities Test (CPAT)
